Joe Collier takes the 2015 British Supersport EVO Championship!

The Scorpion-equipped rider, Joe Collier, has taken the 2015 British Supersport Evo Championship with two rounds still to go! Aged just 20-years-old, Joe has dominated the season and at Assen last Thursday entered into the race 124 points ahead of his closest rival, Marshall Neill. WIth 6 races remaining before the end of season, there were 150 points (6 x 25) up for grabs. Joe naturally wanted to win the championship that weekend, but Assen was an unknown circuit for the whole HARIBO Starmix Team including Joe.

After managing to find his way to the Dutch circuit, Joe then struggled to find his way around it.  And he wasn’t helped by the frequent rain. Consequently, he was – for Race 1 – that far back on the gird that we almost had to send someone down to him to tell him when to go. Fortunately Joe pulled it out of the bag and managed to finish 7th in the Sprint race – and in the process drastically improved his lap-times – that then put him further up the gird for Sunday’s Feature race.

Sunday’s weather was again typically Dutch, such that the bike’s wheels were in and out like a fiddler’s elbow.  Joe eventually started the race on full drys.   But even then that was only after they had to wash the circuit after an oil spill.  In Race 2, Joe rode with his head and picked off yet more riders; it looked as though Joe would finish in a hard fought 4th place,.. but he was then gifted a 3rd place after one of his competitors slipped off on his final lap. 4th would have clinched championship for Joe, but it’s nice that the 3rd meant he was able to do that – with a podium finish too.

Joe explains, ‘I’d never been to Assen before, let alone race here.  I’d recently studied races on TV and tried to memorise the Assen TT circuit from aerial views.  It looked to me like the kind of technical track I could really enjoy.  But it soon became clear that I’d need some serious track-time before I could grow anything approaching a full race-confidence here.  Of course many other riders were in the same boat, but then, many more had raced here before.  And there were some seasoned Dutch competitors here this weekend racing against us; these one-meeting Wild Card’ers would surely use their local expertise to dilute the available BSB race-points.  Many of these Wild Card’ers soon made clear they were more than capable on this fabulous circuit. ‘

‘It was tough coming here to Assen.  It’s not always sensible to be determined to always win – especially at a new-to-me track when surrounded by riders who know the track better; that could surely have ended badly.  But I race with my head, and I’ve managed to become 2015 Supersport EVO Champion.  It’s a great feeling.’

‘I send a big thankyou to all my personal sponsors – for your help and support throughout this year. Plus a huge thank you to Team HARIBO Starmix , to Tony, James and Derek,.. to Kev Gillespie my trainer, to Mollie of course too.  And biggest thanks of all must go to my amazing Mum and Dad for making all of this possible; they have put in so many hours of hard work, love, and money this season to help me.  And I’m so pleased I’ve been able to deliver this amazing result to them and for them.’
