Scorpion sponsored BTCC driver Matt Neal celebrates winning the driver, team and manufacturers title.
The 2011 Season Finale of the BTCC took place at a mostly sunny, albeit a little chilly Silverstone circuit. With a grandstand packed full of excited motorsport fans the scene was set for an almighty battle. As always with BTCC they werent dissappointed. Every race was full of drama, punctures and collisions ensured that the title battle came right down to the wire. This year was the closest the BTCC has been in over 50 years, with 5 drivers all in with a shout at the honours coming in to the day. Only one however would walk away wearing the crown.
The first race of the day was a Honda one two. With Neal taking the top step of the podium, Shedden second and James Nash in third. The 3 Airwaves Focus's didnt fare to well in the first race, with returning BTCC driver James Thompson failing to finish, Jackson 20th and Griffin 15th all was not looking good for them. Although Jackson did manage to pull a fastest lap in which incidently was a new record. Tom Boardman's Seat Leon also ended with a DNF after contact with Collard when exiting Luffield. The outcome of the contact was broken rear suspension for Boardman. Dave Newsham drove a blinding race and found himself finishing in his best place yet, a worthy 6th at the chequered flag.
The second race finished pretty much as the first did, with Honda taking both of the top slots. This time it was Shedden that was on the top step with Neal in second. Leaving Onslow-Cole to stand on the 3rd step. Sadly the Airwaves continued their run of lower finishes with James Thompson colliding with Nick Foster resulting in a DNF for the 2nd time in Thompson's first BTCC meet for Airwaves. Jackson and Griffin fared a little better with 26th and 14th places respectively. With Jackson managing another fastest lap time. The STR prepared Seats of Newsham and Boardman were on fine form for the 2nd race. The yellow car of Dave Newsham romped home in an outstanding 4th place, backed up by Tom Boardman who bought his Leon home in 6th.
With Honda's total dominance of the first 2 races, the only thing left to decide in the championship, was which Honda driver would walk away with the top honours. Even with the top of the table pretty well sewn up, it didnt mean the rest of the pack were going to have an easy race. In the end it was Chilton that took the top step of the podium, closely followed by Plato and Boardman. Matt Neal came home in 8th, 2 places ahead of Shedden in 10th. This gave Neal his 3rd BTCC win. A feat not seen since Andy Rouse way back in the 80's. Airwaves had better results in the final race. Griffin, Thompson and Jackson all managed to bring their cars home; 13th, 18th and 21st places and Thompson bought another fastest lap for the Wrotham based team. STR had mixed fortunes in the last race, Dave Newsham was forced to retire with suspension damage after a strong rear shunt from the Ford of Andy Neate. Tom however battled hard and was rewarded with a 3rd place finish in his final race of the year despite running off the track at Becketts.
The final round also a new BTCC team entering the fray. Thorney Motorsport had joined the BTCC fielding their new Scorpion sponsored Insignia. Unfortunately it proved too much for the team, after suffering many problem's during practise, warm up and qualifying a DNF was recorded in the first race which sadly set the tone for rest of the day.
