Boardman takes Maiden Victory.
Sunday 4th September saw the BTCC arrive in Knockhill for the 7th round of the 2011 series.
An eventful trio of races saw many changes at the top of the leaderboard. The most notable of these was the top spot changing hands to Gordon Shedden. All the changes however couldnt change the fact that Scorpion sponsored drivers make up the top 3 places of the drivers championship and 2 of the top 3 places in the team championship.
The first race of the day was won by Tom Chilton, with Gordon Shedden of Team Dynamics, Honda finishing in 3rd place. The Seats of Tom Boardman and Dave Newsham finished in a very respectable 8th and 15th respectively, despite suffering engine issues during qualification. Airwaves Racing looked to have a good start to the day, Jackson managed to qualilfy in 7th for the first race despite carrying the maximum sucess ballast of 45kg, however this qualifying position was to be the pinnacle of Jackson's weekend. Contact with Rob Collard on lap 23 saw steering damage and a visit to the pits, quick repairs and some excellent driving saw Jackson back on track and salvaging a 17th place finish in race one. Due to Mechanical failure Griffin suffered a DNF in the first race.
The second race saw Boardman out dragging Nash on the start/finish straight at the end of lap one taking 7th place, a tussle with Plato followed with Boardman taking 6th place by lap 9 and holding it for the rest of the race. Dave Newsham started 15th, quickly moving up to 12th. The midfield racing saw places gained and lost for Newsham, but a great move on Aron Smith saw him finally finish in the 12th place he had attained earlier in the race. Race two for the airwaves team was a ver disappointing affair. Jackson and Griffin both ended with a DNF, Jackson's due to a damaged wheel and punctured tyre. Griffin due to electrical gremlins. The Honda's were the shining stars of race two, with Gordon Shedden pulling out a victory and Matt Neal close behind in 2nd place.
Race 3 found Dave Newsham with another cracking start moving into the top 10 by the 4th lap and by lap 23 was up to 9th, in a run of misfortune Newsham lost 2 places and finished the final race of the day in 11th. The reverse grid of the top 7 drivers in the third race saw Tom Boardman start behind Jason Plato. Immediately, Scorpion sponsored Boardman piled the pressure on, on the 4th lap Boardman moved to the inside line down the straight. Plato taking the the tighter line through the SEAT Curves lost shape enabling the steadfast Boardman to close up and touch Plato's bumper. Plato ran wide and forced a safety car situation which enabled Tom to jump into 1st place. In the closing laps of the race, Rob Collard in the RWD BMW came close and threw everything at Tom but he held on and bought the SEAT home for his first ever outright BTCC victory. Airwaves suffered more missery in the final race, despite Jackson putting in a momentous performance. The Henley-in-Arden based driver managed to work his way up to 7th place, from last on the grid. A heavy shunt into the rear of Chilton's focus putpaid to the gallant charge of the former championship leader. Liam Griffin faired better in this race, a consistent performance saw him finish in a satisfactory 16th place. Both Honda's had good solid performances in the final race of the day with Shedden finishing in 5th and team mate Matt Neal in 4th.
These final points saw Gordon Shedden take the championship lead with Matt Neal 1 point behind, Matt Jackson fills the 3rd spot for Airwaves Focus.
